Importance of Strategic planning….

Planning is important as it allows you to prioritize your work, get more done in less time. Planning helps you to produce quality work and keeps as disciplined. It is important to plan your work to improve productivity by ensuring you are staying on the right track with your goals.  In a nut shell, strategic planning helps you see clearly where you are going and exactly how you will get there.

Strategic planning is particularly useful when setting out a 1 to 3 year plan for the company, department or division. The output from strategic planning will be a clear road map with timelines attached to events.  This plan can then be shared and even developed with the input of your team; this will significantly improve their engagement in project.

There are a number of programs which can help you with your planning such as MS Project or Smartsheet.

Step 1 …

Assess the current position within your company or division. Take all factors and influences into consideration.

Step 2…

Detail what the end result should be. Outline what the future should look like.  Having clear goals is key for a successful plan.

Step 3 …

Formulate action plan with all the steps needed to address the gaps in the business. McGraw-Hill (1992) emphasise the importance of any divisional plan being a ‘subset’ of an overall corporate strategy else there is a great risk of the plan lacking support and involvement.

The range of tools available and at your disposal is vast, many of these work well together such as SWOT, PEST and take time to understand your customers needs. Keep in mind that your customers’ perceptions are like to shift over time as they are fluid – any plan needs to offer a degree of flexibility.

Once you start planning you will be amazed at how it naturally flows. The plan will provide a sense of direction with measurable goals. Strategic planning is useful for guiding not only your day-to-day decisions and also for evaluating progress and changing approaches when moving forward.
